NSRTC Black History Month Tributes

The North Salem Republican Town Committee honors Black History month.  Mary Fields, better known as Stagecoach Mary, was born into slavery around 1832 and freed after the Civil War.  She became the first African-American to carry mail in the wild, wild west of 1890's Montana through a contract she received to be a star route carrier.  Mary was a sharp shooter, and she protected the United States mail against Stagecoach bandits with two guns.  "As a star carrier, her job was to protect the mail on her route from thieves and bandits and to deliver mail.  She was only the second woman in the United States (and the first African American woman) to serve in that role" (History.com).  Learn more about the life of Mary Fields at the below at,
