Somers National Golf Club to host summer women’s program for beginner golfers
The Somers National Golf Club announced that it will host “Ladies, Links & Drinks,” a summer program designed to acquaint women 21 and older with the game of golf. The Club will host two 5- week sessions between June and July.
“If you’ve never touched a golf club before, this is the perfect place for you to be,” said Jason Schmahl, golf professional at Somers National.
Schmahl, who started the program three years ago, has seen a steady increase in program participants over the past couple years. “In year one, we had 8-10 women each week. Last year, we had weeks with up to 24 women,” he said.
This year, Schmahl hopes to attract even bigger turnout as more women discover the joy of golfing.
The number of women playing golf rose dramatically during the pandemic; 600,00 women joined the sport since June 2020, according to Golf Inc. Golf was one of the few social activities that was considered “low risk” even at the height of the pandemic. Today, 6 million women in the U.S. play golf.
“The social aspect to the game is a big thing,” Schmahl said. “This program provides an opportunity for women to go out and play with their friends.” Schmahl, who played his first competitive match at age 7, added that the women’s beginner group is among the most supportive group of golfers he’s ever seen.
“The women who are there clap for you no matter how far you hit the ball,” Schmahl said.
At Somers National, program participants will meet Wednesday nights beginning June 1. Sessions begin with a 30-minute clinic and practice on the range led by Schmahl, followed by a few holes on the course. After, participants will have the opportunity to socialize over drinks and appetizers.
The fee for a 5-week program is $250. No equipment is required, other than comfortable clothes and sneakers. Somers National provides the clubs and balls. The drop-in fee for one session is $65. Drop-ins must pre-register with Schmahl via email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or phone (914-364-3620). Click here to register.
