The perfect antique treasure awaits at the Sherman Historical Society Barn Sale

This weekend the Sherman Historical Society and Sherman Library will welcome back treasure hunters to their popular barn and book sale in Sherman, Connecticut. Sale organizers say it’s worth the roughly 30-minute trip from Northern Westchester to the scenic town at the northern end of Candlewood Lake for antiques, collectibles, china, jewelry, rare books and much more.

The Historical Society Barn Sale will take place in a recently restored 1800s barn in Sherman’s town center, with additional items in two large tents nearby. Just a short walk away, the Sherman Library book sale will have thousands of used and rare books for sale in addition to “bags, bangles and baubles.”

“The barn is full,” said Elizabeth Mard, Vice President of the Sherman Historical Society. “The quality of items that were donated this year surpass all of the years past; they’re really beautiful things.” Mard named several items that she expects to be snatched up early, including an 1800s oak hand-carved secretary desk, bentwood chairs, Tiffany vases, a Rosenthal china set for 18, 14 karat and sterling silver jewelry, and much more.

The sale, which primarily draws shoppers from Western Connecticut and Eastern New York, sources items from community donations, with proceeds going to support the Historical Society and Library’s operating costs and programming throughout the year.

“We didn’t have the event last year due to COVID,” Mard said. “It’s been 18 months since we’ve had a fundraiser of any sort. This event will put money back in our coffers to cover our operating expenses and run programming.

This year’s sale will look different from years past but much like what shoppers have come to expect during these pandemic times: distancing, masks and sanitation stations throughout. “We’re observing all COVID guidelines,” Mard said.

From a 1940’s Singer Featherweight vintage sewing machine to basic furniture perfect to fill out a college apartment, Mard says the Sherman Barn Sale will have something for everyone. “We are very, very pleased with the gratitude of the community to give us such beautiful things. There’s usually a line to get in, so be prepared!”

The Sherman Historical Society Barn Sale and Sherman Library Book Sale will take place August 13, 14 and 15 at Sherman Center in Sherman, CT from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day. Click here for more information.
