The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement for our area through 8 p.m. this evening, citing an 'enhanced potential for brush fire spread.' The statement was issued due to recent dry conditions along with wind gusts. Relative humidity levels have dropped below 30 percent and wind gusts are expected of 25-30 mph during this period.
Jonathan Mackey, chief of department for the Somers Fire Department, said Monday that during this time of year the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has a burn ban in effect to help limit the amount of fires.
"This time of year with these conditions, we advise the public to not burn anything outside and to be cognizant of discarding smoking materials. A small fire can grow very quickly under these conditions and that is something we want to avoid," Mackey said.
