The establishment opened at the site of the former Daniel’s on June.

For Angel Reyes, owning the North Salem Pizza and Kitchen is a dream come true. Reyes and his staff celebrated the eatery’s grand opening on May 13 at their location on 60 June Rd. Running this business is a family affair for Reyes. He manages the front of house operations while his cousin, Henry Sorto, is the head chef. “He takes care of the kitchen and makes sure everything tastes good and I handle the rest,” Reyes said.

Reyes grew up in Bedford Hills and attended Fox Lane High School. While a student at Fox Lane, Reyes began working at local restaurants and picking up shifts after school. He worked at the Tuscan Oven in Mt. Kisco and various other establishments in the area. “I loved getting to work as a team with my coworkers and it was a fun environment to be in,” Reyes remarked.

After graduating from Fox Lane in 2009, Reyes knew he wanted to continue working in the restaurant industry. He and Sorto worked at multiple restaurants nearby before they decided to join forces and open their own place. With over 12 years of experience working in several well-respected kitchens, Reyes knew Sorto was up for the challenge. “He’s an amazing chef and has spent years sampling different Italian food recipes to find a collection of the perfect ones,” Reyes said. He believes that with Sorto by his side, he has the recipe for success.

Sorto said that although he is not of Italian heritage, “I have always loved Italian food and have tried to bring a little bit of Italy to this community.”

When it came time to look for a location, Reyes recollected that the space in North Salem was available as soon as they started looking. “It felt like everything was falling into place,” he said.

Before the grand opening, the team held a “Family Fest,” in which they cooked a meal for the family members that had supported and helped them to open the new business. Sorto was brought to tears by how grateful he was to have so many people make his dream of running his own kitchen a reality. Family is a big part of Reyes’ business and he believes opening the store has brought him closer with his cousin. In addition to working alongside Sorto, Reyes’ sister, Iris, works at the restaurant in the afternoons. “The whole team feels like a real family, and we are family,” he said cheerfully.

“For the grand opening we had signs outside and several members of the community came in to support us.” Reyes said, adding, “we have felt so supported by the community since day one;we want to serve them as best we can.”

Reyes said that employees of the adjacent bank and post office, as well as local business owners, have expressed excitement for the North Salem Pizza and Kitchen to open.

Reyes hopes that in the future he can source his produce from local farms and pour into the community more. He also aspires to give high school students the chance to join his establishment and give them a taste of what it’s like working in the food industry.

The restaurant is open every day of the week until 9:00 p.m. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner and a variety of Italian favorites including pizza, pasta, and seafood.
