Inside the doors of Derma Glow Spa in North Salem is a treasure trove of beautifully curated gifts and handmade items to indulge your senses this holiday season. Local resident, JoAnna Kopczyk, began Two Chicks Candle Company with her twin sister and Derma Glow Spa co-owner Jennifer Sciarrino after the candles they were sourcing weren’t living up to their standards. “I really wanted something that even if you didn’t light the candle, you could still get the scent,” Kopczyk explained. She began to play with the chemistry of soy and oils until she found the perfect combination of quality candle bases and fragrant oils. It was essential to the sisters that the candles throw scent whether warmed during lighting or left open on a counter. The sisters strive for the highest quality in every aspect of their business and roll up their sleeves to make it happen. Every candle is handmade locally by Kopczyk in her North Salem home. “It relaxes me,” she admits, “I enjoy being creative and coming up with new scent combinations and trying different applications.”
Carefully constructed and curated, Kopczyk creates collections of six fragrances that change seasonally. Their best seller, lavender, is offered year-round while rotating scents feature the elements of the current season. Playful names like Apple Pickin’ and Baxter Road with its woodsy scent pay tribute to North Salem while bringing the outdoors in with a fragrance that pleasantly emits throughout your room. Montauk Escape reflects their Long Island roots with a beachy, fruity smell. Their current holiday collection includes Winter Woods with a crisp Fraser fir and blue spruce fragrance and Hansel and Gretel’s House which fills your home with the aroma of warm baked goods. Other candles in the collection include Dry Gin and Cypress, Cranberry Woods, Holiday Eggnog and Cozy Nights.
The candles hold a special place in the heart of these sisters as they were pivotal in their survival during the coronavirus pandemic. “Our clients kept us going by purchasing candles when the spa could not be open. We would hand deliver them for those three months,” Sciarrino recalls. “We have had clients who have been with us since day one. They are like family to us.”
Recently, Two Chicks Candle Company has expanded its offerings to include bath and body products. “I have psoriasis and eczema and wanted to create something that moisturizes your skin,” Kopczyk explains. She began creating products that focus on hydration, leaving the skin not only clean but soft. “In the wintertime, it’s so dry. These products really work for me.” Cold-processed soaps, pumice scrubs with argon oil, lip balms, and snowball bath truffles promise to indulge your senses while caring for your skin. “For the people who don’t like taking baths, you can still get the aromatherapy with shower steamers,” says Sciarrino. Additional items include home and linen sprays, car diffusers, and coconut melts. Custom gift favors for all occasions are also available upon request.
Derma Glow Spa opened thirteen years ago shortly after the sisters relocated to North Salem. “My mother found the location was available while talking in line at the post office,” Sciarrino chuckles. Licensed aestheticians and nail technicians, the two expanded their growing business in North Salem after working on Long Island in a smaller space. “Every year keeps getting better and better,” the sisters reflect with delight. Derma Glow Spa has become a comforting cornerstone of self-care and beauty to local residents who can enjoy manicures/pedicures, facials, full body waxing, lash lifting, Derma planing, and recently added Geneo and Microcurrent (innovative facial techniques) services. The spa also offers massages that can be made by appointment as well as makeup for all occasions.
