Two people were attacked by a rabid coyote on Turkey Hill Road near Route 121 Thursday afternoon, North Salem Town Supervisor Warren Lucas reported.
North Salem emergency services were dispatched to the corner of Grant Road and Turkey Hill Road at 4:20 p.m. One woman was bitten and suffered a puncture wound on her leg. She was transported to the hospital for rabies shots. The second person was uninjured.
The presumption is that the coyote is rabid. It attacked the tires of a car that stopped to help, according to Lucas.
Town police made an effort to locate the animal in the woods near the site of the incident but were unsuccessful.
Lucas said that the animal can be a distance away from where the attack took place. He urged all dog owners to make sure their pets are up to date on their rabies shots and to check with the Town Clerk’s office at (914) 669-5577. to ensure they have a valid dog license.
