Northern Westchester Hospital last week won the Emergency Nurses Association Lantern Award - the only award dedicated to showcasing emergency departments for their outstanding work. This is the second time the Mount Kisco hospital has earned the prestigious award.

Derek Anderson, executive director at Northern Westchester Hospital, said, “as both a resident of North Salem and as Northern Westchester Hospital’s leader I know how important it is for the surrounding community to have a hospital that’s close to home with leading-edge technology and high-performing medical expertise. When unexpected life- or limb-threatening health conditions occur our ED offers the best and immediate medical attention in the area. Every day I admire the work our ED and in particular our nursing staff does to save lives in the community.”

“Northern Westchester Hospital was the first emergency department in New York State to achieve this award,” said Lisa Padilla, RN Nurse Manager, Emergency Department at Northern Westchester Hospital. “The ENA Lantern Award is a recognition award given to emergency departments that exemplify exceptional practice and innovative performance in the core areas of leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research. This award is a visible symbol of an emergency department’s commitment to quality and safety and presence of a healthy work environment. It’s an honor to work alongside the ED team and despite the challenges of the pandemic over the past two years, we are still recognized as exceptional.”

Catherine Manley-Cullen, RN, MS, chief nursing officer at NWH, praised her staff for earning the award despite the ongoing challenge of delivering care through the pandemic. “As a former Emergency Department nurse, I know that the Lantern Award is one of the highest achievements Emergency departments can receive,” Manley-Cullen said. “The Lantern Award recognizes Emergency Departments that demonstrate innovative performance in leadership, practice, education, advocacy, & research. Our Northern Westchester nurses have been recognized by the Emergency Nurses Association with this award not once, but twice! This is no small feat given all the challenges that the pandemic has bestowed on health care clinicians. I am so proud of our ED team here at Northern Westchester Hospital. The outstanding compassionate care that they provide is truly exemplary.”

Northern Westchester Hospital was one of just 29 U.S. hospitals to earn the Lantern Award. Other New York hospitals that made the list include Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson and Staten Island University Hospital.
