Putnam County Dance Project, sponsored by Town of Southeast Cultural Arts Coalition, brings a program of uplifting dances, including dances from the revolutionary “mother” of modern dance, Isadora Duncan. Leading Duncan dancers who have performed around the world and studied the work extensively will show repertory that has been handed down from generation to generation, recreated from archival research and danced to the music of Chopin, Corelli and Schubert among others. Three performers steeped in the technique (Marie Carstens, MaryBeth Hraniotis and Faith Kimberling) will share their expertise at the 7 pm show on June 18th in Brewster, NY.
PCDP Co-director, Marie Carstens, started studying Duncan technique in 1995. She received a Certificate in Isadora Duncan Studies from Isadora Duncan International Institute, Inc., and after studying and performing for several years Marie co-founded the Duncan Dance Collective, creating new works within the technique for over ten years. Marie continued to study and perform Duncan repertoire with leading Duncan companies and currently performs with Dances by Isadora/NYC under the direction of Catherine Gallant.
Marybeth Hraniotis is a 3rd generation Duncan dancer, choreographer, and repertory teacher from Isadora to Maria-Theresa Duncan directly from Jeanne Bresciani at the Isadora Duncan International Institute, Inc., founded by Maria-Theresa and Kay Bardsley. MaryBeth continues to perform and present her work in the U.S. and abroad drawing from Isadora’s great repository of dances steeped in archetype, myth, and image to share with communities spanning diverse platforms. Faith Kimberling danced with the well-known Lori Belilove & Isadora Duncan Dance Company from 2005-2021, performing many Duncan solo and group works in NY and around the world. For this concert, she will be performing Duncan pieces new to her. Steven Jelstch, who grew up in Kent, NY now dances professionally and returns to join PCDP. Co-Director Erin Jennings, who performed in NY and on tour for 2 decades with various professional dance and theatrical companies will also be dancing. New modern dances by the company will also be presented.
These dancers grace the stage at the Southeast Old Town Hall Theater, a registered national historic building, which has been restored from the original 1896 center. PCDP is thrilled to present their program of historic and timeless dances in the Hall: “What an honor it is to share these historic and celebrated dances in this iconic Brewster theater. We are so grateful for the ongoing support of Town of Southeast Cultural Arts Coalition.”
